We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Maybe someone can help with an incomplete reference.
On p. 173 of *Schrift und Schriftlichkeit*, Herbert Brekle refers to his
discussion of Derrick de Kerckhove's (1988) suggestions regarding
lateralization, direction of writing, and presence of notation of vowels
in a script. The reference is given simply as "erscheint. Die
Antiqualinie von -1500 bis +1500. Prinzipien und Parameter der
Morphogenese des westlichen Alphabets." Does anyone know where I can
find this?
Also, does anyone know of any further discussions of de Kerckhove's
notions? I had not previously encountered them in the literature on
writing systems (two chapters in *The Alphabet and the Brain*, ed. de
Kerchkove and Lumsden, which reports a 1982 Toronto conference convened
to address the question; I have to assume that much of the
neurolinguistics in the book is by now severely outdated).

Dear netters,
a student of mine is writing her dissertation on the use of euphemisms
in the English language. Please let me know of any addresses where she
could find updated bibliographical information. She has traced
references to articles published in "Waiguoyu" (Beijing, China) by
such scholars as Dingfang Shu (1989), Guonan Li (1989), Songnian Wang
(1993) and Qingcheng Kong (1993): is it possible to have a copy of
these via e-mail?
Thank you very much for any leads you can give.
