Tenure Track Position in Linguistics
University of Chicago


       The Department of Linguistics, University of Chicago,  seeks to fill
a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. We are looking
for a scholar of exceptional promise with high competence in at least two
areas of specialization, preferably including phonetics, phonology, or
computational linguistics. The successful candidate should have
demonstrated a research agenda that is likely to establish new trends of
scholarship in the coming century. He or she will be expected to teach at
both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

        Interested parties should submit a CV, a detailed statement of
their research agenda over the next few years, a sample of their scholarly
writing, and at least three letters of recommendation (sent directly to us
by the references). In the CV, please include contact information through

Subject:  Updated Sociolinguistics at Virginia Poly Tech

The Department of English at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State
University seeks to make a tenure-track Assistant Professor
appointment in Sociolinguistics, effective 15 August 1999.  Funding
has now received final approval.  Course load 2+2.  The successful
candidate must be able to teach such regularly offered courses as
Modern English Linguistics and English Syntax, and will be charged
with developing new courses in sociolinguistics.  Strong interests
in conducting interdisciplinary work with such departments/programmes
as Black Studies, Communication Studies, Education, Sociology, Women's
Studies, etc., will be an advantage.  Please direct letters of interest
