               Professorship of General Linguistics

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Professorship
of General Linguistics, which falls vacant upon the resignation of
Professor J.T. Higginbotham, FBA,  with effect from 1 October 2000
or such later date as may be arranged.  (This is a senior post,
equivalent to a US Full Professorship.)

    The professor should be a general linguist with an outstanding
research record.  He or she is likely to specialize in one of the
major subdomains of linguistics but should also have an interest in
the description of individual languages and be willing to work with
scholars from different schools of linguistics.

    A non-stipendiary fellowship at Somerville College is attached
to the professorship.

    Applications (ten copies, or one only from overseas candidates),
naming three persons who have agreed to act as referees on this
occasion, should be received not later than 11 October 1999 by the

School of Communication Sciences and Disorders
Faculty of Health Sciences

The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders wishes to appoint a
senior academic to share leadership in contributing to and enhancing
further its level of research and scholarship.  The appointment to the
position will be on a continuing basis. The successful candidate will
engage in independent and collaborative research and publication, research
mentorship of colleagues, supervision of research students, research
leadership and development and external grant procurement in one or more
areas related to human communication sciences and/or communication
disorders.  Teaching in area(s) of expertise and participation in the
academic leadership and effective management of the School, including
serving one or more terms as Head of School, would also be expected.

Candidates should have a qualification in speech pathology (speech-language
pathology) or audiology and a doctoral degree or equivalent. They must also
have an outstanding record of research and scholarly achievements with an
international standing, evidence of significant grant procurement and
successful research student supervision, demonstrated excellence in
university-level education, evidence of ability to communicate and relate
effectively with the community, other disciplines, and the relevant
professions, effective management and leadership skills, and evidence of
interpersonal skills that foster and maintain positive, effective, and
collaborative relationships with colleagues and students.

The School presents an outstanding base of research and scholarship in
communication sciences and disorders.  It offers a nonclinical hearing and
speech undergraduate degree, professional preparation in speech-language
pathology, and research masters and PhD programs with more than 30 graduate
research students.  It has an active research and teaching program with
approximately 25FTE academic and clinical staff.  A large on-campus speech,
language, and hearing clinic that functions as a research and clinical
teaching laboratory as well as a clinical service facility supports the
School's academic activities.  The School also has a well-equipped speech
science laboratory and established relationships with schools and
hospitals, including clinical affiliates, which facilitate and support a
variety of research interests.

The position is full-time continuing, subject to the satisfactory
completion of a probation period for new appointees. Membership of a
University-approved superannuation (retirement) plan is a condition of
employment for new appointees.

Notes:

1.  The word "should" in reference to a speech pathology (speech-language
pathology) or audiology qualification needs to be interpreted as a
preference, not as a required qualification for the position.  The same is
true for the reference to a doctoral qualification.  Individuals whose
research/academic interests are in any areas related to communication
sciences and/or communication disorders are encouraged to apply.

2.   The word "Chair" needs to be interpreted as the academic rank/level of
(Full) Professor and does not indicate an administrative role such as "Head
of School."  Instead, reference to administration is made where the
announcement reads "...participation in...management of the School,
including serving...as Head of School...."

3.   "Continuing Appointment" means that the position is not a contract or
term position.  The University has recently discontinued using the word
"tenure."
