This is an ethnographic study of language use and language
planning on the French island of Corsica where there has
been language shift away from the minority language
(Corsican) towards French. Jaffe uses case studies of
language classrooms, spelling contests, public debates over
language legislation and codeswitching on bilingual radio
programs to explore the complex interrelationship between
linguistic ideologies and practices. The book focuses both
on language domination and sites of "resistance" to dominant
language ideologies.

Language-Ideological Debates presents analyses of
historically situated discursive events - debates - during
which ideas about language are formed, articulated, and
authoritatively entextualized. The studies cover cases as
diverse as Corsica, the US, Singapore and Congo. Based on
detailed empirical analyses, the book intends to fuel the
theoretical discussion on language, history, and society.
