THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO
Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies

The Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, University of Texas at San
Antonio, seeks a specialist in language minority education with broad
knowledge of and record of research on bilingualism, biculturalism,
and/or literacy for an assistant professorship to begin in Fall 2000,
pending budgetary approval.  The Division offers a Bachelor of Arts
degree in Mexican American Studies, a Master of Arts degree with
concentrations in Bicultural Studies, Bicultural-Bilingual Education,
and English as a Second Language, and is expected to begin a Ph.D.
program in Culture, Literacy, and Language.  It also provides
undergraduate and graduate programs for teacher certification as well as
support courses for other programs in the University.

Responsibilities Include: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses,
advise undergraduate and graduate students, pursue an active research
agenda, and provide support to the teacher-training program in
Interdisciplinary Studies.

Required Qualifications:  Doctorate or ABD with specialization in
bicultural/bilingual education, biliteracy/literacy, applied
linguistics, anthropology of education, sociology of education or a
closely related area.  University teaching experience at the
undergraduate level.  Record of research and/or publication in one or
more of the following areas: of language minority education, cultural
pluralism, linguistic diversity.  Proficiency in Spanish and English.

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience in teaching or conducting research
in public schools (K-12), experience working with funded projects,
experience in conducting research among U.S. Latino populations, and
ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

Appointment:  Starting with the Fall 2000 semester. Doctorate must be
completed by August 31, 2000, for rank of Assistant Professor without
tenure, otherwise appointment will be at the Instructor level. Salary is
competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

LECTURER IN LINGUISTICS
(3 Year Fixed Term)

School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics

The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics requires a three-year
contract appointment in Linguistics. The appointee will play a leading role
in designing and introducing a new online course: MA (Applied Linguistics).
In conjunction with the course coordinator, the appointee will work as an
anchor person for the development and implementation of this course, but
will also teach at undergraduate and graduate levels in general linguistics
to enable other linguistics staff to participate in curriculum development.
The MA (Applied Linguistics) will be reviewed after two years, with plans
beyond the third year contingent on its financial success.

The successful applicant will have appropriate qualifications in
Linguistics and/or Applied Linguistics, experience in curriculum
development, enthusiasm and ability to work in online course design
(undertaking training if necessary), demonstrated ability to teach in
applied linguistics (especially second language acquisition) and in at
least one of the following other areas: intercultural communication,
sociolinguistics. Experience in the development of interactive web-based
and/or multimedia teaching materials would be an advantage, as would
ability to teach in areas of general linguistics.

The successful candidate will be expected to take up duties early in 2000.
