This is to inform of a workshop on 18-SCL on May 18th-20th, 2000 in
Lund.

Comparative Circum-Baltic Syntax

 It has been suggested in the literature, that there are some
 phenomena in the languages spoken around the Baltic Sea which point
 towards a "Baltic Sprachbund" at least to some limited extent. The
 familiar assumption behind the notion of a Sprachbund is that
 languages that are situated geographically close to each other,
 although of different origin, might have one way or mutual influence
 on the neighbouring languages. This workshop wishes to explore the
 possible influences on each other's morpho-syntactic structure
 between the circum-Baltic languages: the  Mainland Scandinavian
 languages (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian), Finno-Ugric;  (Finnish,
 Estonian);  Slavic (Russian, Polish) and Baltic ones (Latvian,
 Lithuanian). The papers should cover at least two languages not from
 the same family group (e.g. Swedish and Estonian, or Russian and
 Latvian) and may be on any topic (e.g. the expression of
 definiteness, the use of case, morphological structure). To this
 workshop papers from any theoretical framework and also detailed
 comparative descriptive papers are welcomed.

ALGEBRAIC METHODS IN LANGUAGE PROCESSING

Aims of the Workshop
- ------------------
The aim of this workshop is to bring together those
researchers on formal language theory, programming
language theory and natural language description
theory, that have a common interest in the use of
algebraic methods to describe syntactic, semantic and
pragmatic properties of language.  While firmly rooted
in the tradition of mathematical linguistics, the workshop
does not concentrate on natural language only. There is
interesting use of algebraic methods in programming
language processing (compiler construction and
development of programming language environments)
and (obviously) in formal language theory. Moreover,
it is becoming clear that some of the methods
developed in these fields can play a role in natural
language description and processing.

About AMAST
- ---------
This workshop is organized in the framework provided by
the Algebraic Methodology and Software Technology (AMAST)
movement. In this framework several large international
conferences and workshops have been held.

This Second AMAST Workshop on Language Processing will
be organized in Iowa City just before the AMAST 2000
conference (see http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/amast2000/). As
the previous workshop, held at the University of Twente
in the Netherlands, this workshop will focus on algebraic
and general mathematical methods in formal languages,
programming languages and natural languages.
