We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Dear Members,
I am a Ph.D. student working on machine translation of Compound Nouns,
especially from Japanese to German.
I would be grateful for information about new tendencies and experiments
in the field, especially those including the use of corpora, statistics,
or word similarity.
If there are several answers, I may also post a summary.
Many thanks in advance.

Greetings!
Does anyone know authoritatively what the source of the pithy
catch-phrase about the difference between a language and a dialect
being that a language has an army and a dialect doesn't? And how the
original wording runs? In addition to posting an answer to the list,
if you have one, could you please cc. a copy to me? Thanks in advance!
George Fowler
