ALAA 2000
APPLIED LINGUISTICS ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA ANNUAL CONGRESS

THEME: 'INTERACTION AND IDENTITY'

THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
JULY 7-9, 2000

ALAA 2000, the Annual Congress of the Applied Linguistics Association
of Australia will be held at Trinity College, The University of
Melbourne from Friday July 7 to Sunday July 9, 2000.  It will be held
in parallel with the Australian Linguistics Society Congress (ALS2k)
and registration for one conference permits participation in the
other.

Both conferences will be held on the middle weekend of the Australian
Linguistics Institute (ALI) which runs from July 3-14.  No ALI
sessions will be held on the conference weekend.

Plenary speakers will include:

Jim LANTOLF, Director of the Center for Language Acquisition and
Professor of Applied Linguistics and Spanish at Pennsylvania State
University. His most recent book, Sociocultural theory and
second language learning, is forthcoming with OUP.

Robyn PENMAN, Professor in Communication at the University of Canberra
and Executive Director of the Communication Research Institute of
Australia. Her book, Reconstructing Communicating, is forthcoming with
Lawrence Erlbaum.

Proposals are hereby solicited for presentations in the following
categories:

1) Individual papers and 2) Symposia.

Proposals linked to the theme are particularly encouraged but other
proposals are also welcome.  (In addition, invited symposia on themes
such as Language and Sexuality, New Perspectives on SLA Research and
Standards in LOTE will be featured at the Congress.)

TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS
1)      Individual papers: Individual papers are presentations
involving theory and research and their relation to practice. Paper
presentations will be 20 minutes in duration, and will be followed by 8
minutes for questions and comments from the audience.

2)      Symposia:  Symposia are presentations that involve multiple
presenters on a single theme, and are best suited to the discussion of
research and theory and their relation to practice.  Symposia will be
up to two hours in duration, and may include up to a maximum of five
individual presenters.

If at all possible, proposals should be submitted electronically,

Individual papers:

Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words.  They should include i)
rationale, ii) methodology/ application, iii) results, and iv)
implications.

Symposia:

Abstracts should be no longer than 350 words.  The title of each
individual presentation within the symposium and the name of each
presenter must also be supplied.  Abstracts for the individual
presentations within the symposium are optional at this stage, but must
be supplied once the symposium has been accepted.

5. AV equipment required, other than an OHP.  (OHPs will be provided
for all presentations.)

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS:

In order to be considered, proposals must be received by 7th
February 2000.

We will attempt to notify the correspondent of acceptance or
non-acceptance by 6th March 2000.
