Subject:  Invitation to Discussion in Virtual Recitation

Dear Subscribers,

We, a Course Instructor and a Recitation Instructor for a course
'LINGUISTICS 1000: Language in US Society' at University of Colorado
at Boulder, would like to invite you to join the recitation
discussions which are taking place on-line.  This is an experimental
recitation section (in its fourth semester) in which the students
participate in the discussions without coming to a classroom.

(Please visit http://www.colorado.edu/ling/sp99/1000 and click
'Virtual Recitation' from the Web Page Menu to go to the
recitation. When a pop-up window opens, please use 'guest' for both
login ID [User Name] and Password.)

As we are using 'Language: Readings in Language and Culture, 6th ed.'
by Clark, Escholz and Rosa as a text, we would welcome comments of the
contributors of this book as well as teachers and researchers of the
topics (described below) covered by the course.  (Also, please refer
to 'Calendar' page for the assigned readings.)

The topics and the dates (approximate) for the discussion are:
   1. Intro to Language Development -- Jan. 11 - 22
   2. Language Acquisition -- Jan. 25 - 29
   3. Dialects in the United States -- Feb. 1 - 12
   4. Gender-based Language Difference -- Feb. 15 - 19
   5. American Sign Language -- Feb. 22 - 26
   6. Bilingualism -- Mar. 8 - 19
   7. Literacy and School Languages -- Mar. 29 - Apr. 9
   8. Endangered Languages -- Apr. 12 - 16
   9. Language Legislation -- Apr. 19 - 23
  10. Mediated Language -- Apr. 26 - 30

The discussion will begin with a couple of summaries of the assigned
readings to be posted on a forum for each topic (accessible from
'Virtual Recitation Homepage' by clicking 'bulletins' icon) and then
flow rather freely just as an in-class recitation goes.

The students in this recitation may be excited to have experts on the
various topics participating in their discussions.  One of the
purposes of the Virtual Recitation is to involve them in a larger
academic community and expose them to several perspectives on the
topics under discussion.

If you are interested in joining our discussion, please visit our
'Virtual Discussion page' and click 'Information' icon for more
details.

We also welcome comments and recommendations on the Virtual Recitation
as it is set up or as a pedagogical tool for large lecture classes.

Hi all,

My name is Einat Amitay and I'm a PhD student with MRI & CSIRO,
Macquarie University, Australia.

I would like to ask you to take part in an online experiment I'm
conducting. It would take about 5 minutes of your time and would help
me in further developing my system (related to search engine results
on the web - you'll be able to learn more after completing the
experiment).

context of the system and since I collect no personal data there will
