   The Department of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Brown
University invites applicatons for a Visiting Assistant Professor position
beginning on July 1, 1999 for a term of one year.  Duties will include
teaching Introduction to Linguistic Theory, and Introduction to
Phonological Theory in the Fall semester, and one course in the Spring
semester.  (The Spring semester course will be determined by the
successful candidate's expertise and by departmental needs.)
Ph.D must be in hand by August, 1999.

Professor of French as a Foreign Language

The University of the Americas-Puebla, Mexico, invites applications
for the post of full-time professor of French as a foreign language in
the Department of Languages. The successful candidate will have a
Ph.D. in hand in French Applied Linguistics, Foreign Language
Teaching, or related area. She or he will have experience teaching
French to undergraduates (preferably also content courses for
non-native speakers). The successful candidate will have an area of
specialization in and experience with student-directed language
learning centers. The successful candidate may also be asked in the
future to teach courses for the Master's Degree in Applied
Linguistics, in the area of French linguistics and language teaching,
depending on departmental needs and funding. The position will require
near-native proficiency in French and, for non-fluent speakers of
Spanish, a commitment to achievement of professional competence in the
language.

The Department of Languages offers courses in English, French,
Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, Greek, and Latin. It also offers a
Master's degree in Applied Linguistics as well as Spanish as a foreign
language for international students. Full time faculty teach an
average of 14 hours a week and participate in collaborative
departmental and institutional duties. The department has recently
opened a Language Learning Center, which also requires faculty
involvement. All official business is conducted in Spanish; however,
fluent English skills are helpful.

The appointment (initially for one year, but renewable) will begin in
August, 1999. Benefits include car and possibility of subsidized
on-campus housing.  Rank and salary commensurate with experience and
