Please follow the instructions given below under the heading
- > CONGRESS PARTICIPATION - SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS FOR PAPERS AND SESSION
(especially concerning the length of the abstracts)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- > THEME OF THE CONGRESS
Semiotics studies signs and the processes in which they are
involved. These processes give rise to meanings, which requires
systems of some complexity. All papers are welcome which investigate
the various possible relationships between signs and complex systems.
This is a current issue for numerous academic disciplines ranging from
the humanities and social sciences to the natural and engineering
sciences. Recent efforts in these disciplines have generated
comprehensive models of communication and cognition which are a
challenge for Semiotics as well as a justification for its claim of
being a universal science and a conceptual basis for other sciences.
- > PROGRAM OF THE CONGRESS
All contributions discussing sign processes as parts of larger systems
are welcome. Questions discussed can range over all subject matters
and academic disciplines.
Papers will be grouped into sessions or workshops. Plenary lectures
dealing with various topics will be arranged to facilitate and
coordinate some general reflections on various dimensions of
sign-system complexity.
- > CONGRESS PARTICIPATION - SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS FOR PAPERS AND SESSION
The deadline for submission of PAPERS to be presented within the
framework of the Congress is MAY 31, 1999. Submissions can be made in
any one of the four languages of the Congress (English, French,
Spanish, or German). Each presentation, including discussion, will
have a TIME-LIMIT OF 30 MINUTES.
PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS are to include a title and an abstract of
appr. 300 WORDS. The proposal should be sent, together with a
completed Registration Form, to the Office of the Organizing
Committee. No participant can submit more than two paper proposals.
Congress participants can choose an appropriate session for presenting
their paper. Contacts with the session conveners can be established
through the Organization Office.
PROPOSALS FOR SESSIONS or workshops are also invited. Session
proposals are to include a title and an abstract of approximately 500
words. In addition, session proposals must include a list of names of
those who will participate in the session, together with a
Registration Form completed for the person of the session organizer.
All abstracts should contain a list of 5 keywords indicating the major
subject(s) of the presentation or session.
All submissions will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee
which will constitute the final list of sessions and the assignment of
individual papers within sessions. Decisions of the Scientific
Committee will be communicated by the end of June, 1999.
In case you send the proposal as an ATTACHMENT to an email, the
FILENAME has to be your LAST NAME. Please remember to fill in the
Registration Form, and send it together with your title and abstract
to the Organizing Committee.
- > PLENARY LECTURES
The Plenary Lectures will be grouped according to their relation to
the general theme. The IASS-AIS has invited the following speakers:
Umberto ECO (Italy), Herman PARRET (Belgium), Itamar EVEN-ZOHAR
(Israel), Alexander MEYSTEL (USA), James ALBUS (USA), Grzegorz
ROZENBERG (Netherlands), Phillipe BOUDON (France), Jaime NUBIOLA

AL-BAGHDADI (Lebanon), Terry THREADGOLD (Australia), Alexandros
Ph. LAGOPOULOS (Greece), Fernando ANDACHT (Uruguay).
- > SECTIONS AND SESSIONS
Suggestions received so far for Congress Sessions are grouped into
eight major sections (in every section there are four to ten
sessions).
I FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF SEMIOTICS AND OF THE THEORY OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS
II SIGN PROCESSES IN COMPLEX SYSTEMS
III COMPLEX SYSTEMS OF SIGN PROCESSES
IV CULTURES AND SOCIETIES AS COMPLEX SYSTEMS
V SEMIOTIC QUESTIONS IN THE THEORY OF COMPLEX SPACES
VI MEDIA AS COMPLEX SYSTEMS
VII COMPLEXITY OF SIGN PROCESSES AS A TOPIC IN THE HISTORY OF SEMIOTICS
VIII SEMIOTIC STUDIES IN THE WORLD
The provisional list of sessions is inlcuded in the 2nd Call
http://vhf.msh-paris.fr/escom/AIS/7IASS-99/7iass-prog.html#sect
According to this list, congress participants can choose the

session conveners can be established through the Organization Office.
In addition to the sessions, a Round Table will be organized for each
Section topic.
- > IASS-AIS 1969-1999
The year 1999 marks the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the
IASS-AIS. This anniversary is an occasion to review the history of
