We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Questionnaire on academic presentations. Please help us learn more
about them!

The JACET (Japan Association of College English Teachers) Kansai
Chapter Oral English Special Interest Group is conducting a research
project on academic presentations. We would like to ask your help in
responding to this SHORT questionnaire.

Please contact y_ishikawa at kufs.ac.jp to receive the questionnaire.

Subject: Scalar adjectives

Some colleagues of mine are involved in social science surveys,
particularly in the area of perceived noise annoyance levels. Here in
Japan, using a translated version of a robust scale that has produced
relatively similar results in different nations, they have found that the
results do not correspond to previous research. Though they are not
confining their research to questions of translation, I was wondering if
there had been linguistic research on these questions, including the
translation of scalar adjectives from one language to another and the
possible bearing this would have on the Whorf-hypothesis. If you know of
any references, please feel free to send them to me by email. If I get more
than 4 references, I will post a summary.

cheers

Dear listers:

I would appreciate any hint on where on the net one can get info on the
mathematics of dependency trees. A summary of your submissions will be
posted.

Best wishes,
