The Linguistic Association of Finland is organizing a symposium on
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS IN THE ANALYSIS OF
LINGUISTIC STRUCTURE
to be held at the University of Helsinki,
September 2-4, 1999.
The symposium will bring together linguists interested in all aspects
of language that relate to the relationship between syntax and
semantics (such as argument structure, other types of constructions,
linking, the role of context and lexical items, cognitive issues,
idioms etc.). The aim of the symposium is to discuss the analysis of
linguistic data as well as theoretical issues. The focus will be on
linguistic phenomena rather than any particular descriptive
formalism. Participants are strongly encouraged to give a paper on any
aspect of the relation between syntax and semantics, as this is an
excellent opportunity to get feedback from others working in this
area.

Activities:

* presentations by other participants (20 min + 10 min for discussion)
Registration
The deadline for submission of abstracts (in English; max 500 words)
is April 30, 1999. Please submit your abstract by e-mail
to the following address:
syn-sem at ling.helsinki.fi
E-mail submissions are strongly recommended. If, however, you send
your abstract by ordinary mail, please provide an e-mail address as a
contact address. Participants will be notified about acceptance by May
24, 1999.
The deadline for registration and payment for all participants is June
15,1999. Register by e-mail to the e-mail address above.

CONFERENCE ON CO-OPERATION IN THE FIELD OF TERMINOLOGY
IN EUROPE
MAY, 17, 18 AND 19, 1999
CALL FOR PAPERS
Aim of the Conference

The European Association for Terminology (EAFT) is organising the
Conference on co-operation in the field of terminology in Europe in
co-operation with the national or regional European terminology
associations: AETER, ELETO, BriTerm, DTT, TermRom-Bucarest,
TermRom-Moldova, Termip, Ass.I.Term, NL-TERM, and ProTLS.
The Conference will take place on May 17, 18 and 19, 1999, in Paris, or
in the region of Paris. The Conference will deal with problems that
terminologists and experts encounter during their work in the field of
terminology; to find solutions for these problems and to discuss the
establishment of a terminological infrastructure for Europe.
Simultaneously, demonstrations of linguistic products (software,
CD-ROMs, Websites, etc.) and an exchange of ideas market will take place
in rooms especially reserved for this purpose. The Conference will be
concluded by the drafting of a Plan of Action and a statement of
decisions to be taken to respond to the requirements of terminologists,
and to establish various forms of co-operation.
Call for papers
------------------
The EAFT welcomes the submission of articles on the problems defined
below. Suggestions for topics are presented for each section, but other
topics are also welcome. The core element of each submitted article must
be the description of the problem and the solution(s) offered. Authors
are asked to identify the section and problem to which their submissions
correspond.
Abstracts of the articles should be sent to the attention of Ms. Helmi
Sonneveld by March 19 at the latest. The abstracts should contain the
title of the article, a minibiography including the author's name,
address, phone and fax numbers and e-mail address and the section for
which the article is meant. Papers should have a length of 20 minutes.
The length of the abstract is two pages maximum. If applicable, please
indicate of which terminology association the author is a member.
Abstracts will undergo a reviewing process carried out by the
Programming Committee which consists of the members of the Board of
the EAFT. The Programming Committee was installed on December 6 by
mandate of the national and regional terminology associations. The
authors will be informed about the acceptance of their article by the
2nd of April. There will be time until 1st of May to submit a full
paper in A4 camera-ready format and on disk, which will be processed
for publication in the Proceedings.
The working languages of the Conference are: French and English.
