DISCOURSES AND LEARNING: THEORETICAL AND APPLIED PERSPECTIVES

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS

The Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language, Lancaster
University, is holding a two-day Applied Linguistics Conference on the
10th and 11th July 1999 at Lancaster University.

The theme of the conference is Discourses and Learning: Theoretical
and Applied Perspectives. The way we experience and interepret the
world, the way knowledge and social practice are structured
(Fairclough, 1992), is through discourse in general and through a
multiplicity of discourses in particular. By including 'discourses' in
the theme for this conference, we are thus acknowledging the
inextricable role of discourse in all aspects of Applied Linguistics
research.  And what is research about if not about 'learning'? More
particularly, research into language education, with its strong focus
on the learner and language learning processs, would seem to have an
uncontested place in the field of Applied Linguistics. By putting
'discourses' and 'learning' together, then, we may be thinking first
of all of the discourse and discourses of both formal and informal
education, but we are also thinking more widely about the ways in
which discourse and learning are apparent throughout our discipline.

Consequently, we are hoping for submissions from a wide range of
Applied Linguistics areas, but will give preference to those which,
implicitly or explicitly, take 'learning', 'discourses' or both as
central and invite proposals for:

i) Presentations of completed research or research in progress (20
minutes presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion), and;

ii) Workshops that include significant audience participation (60 - 90
minutes).

Please prepare your proposal abstracts in the following format:

i) three copies of the abstract (single spaced) - include the name(s)
and affiliation(s) of the presenter(s) on the top left-hand corner of
ONE copy only. If you are submitting by e-mail you need only send one
copy of the abstract.

ii) on a separate sheet, indicate the following information: the
presenter's/presenters' name(s); affiliation(s); brief bio-data
statement(s); title of presentation; three key words for the
presentation; address of principal contact (including e-mail if
applicable); telephone and fax number of principal contact.

Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and preference will be
given to proposals that draw on the theme of the conference. The
deadline for proposals is Wednesday, 31 March 1999.

Workshop in the framework of the 32nd Annual Meeting of the SOCIETAS
LINGUISTICA EUROPAEA,
Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, 8-11 July, 1999

This workshop is intended for linguists, computational linguists,
translators and other experts who are actively involved or interested
in the field of language technologies. We especially wish to focus on
multilingual technologies, which are gaining relevance for the
Slovenian community in view of the accession to the multilingual
Europe.

Presentations are invited addressing or related to the following topics:

* corpora - mono- or multilingual corpora; approaches to the
  compilation and exploitation of corpora;
* tools for corpus querying and processing;
* mono- or multilingual lexicons and dictionaries;
* terminology management; building and using terminological databases;
* technologies for translation and interpreting;
* software localization;
* the internet and language technologies;
* other technologies aimed at supporting intercultural communication
  and providing language resources and tools.

Extended abstracts not exceeding 2 pages should be submitted by e-mail
