Subject:  General Linguistics: Kentucky Foreign Language Conference

Call for Papers: Kentucky Foreign Language Conference Linguistics Sessions

The 53rd annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference will be held April 27-29,
2000, at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.  The conference will include
sessions devoted to all aspects of theoretical and descriptive linguistics,
sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics.

If you wish to present a paper in one of these sessions, send two copies of a
one-page abstract to Prof. Gregory Stump, 1215 Patterson Office Tower,
University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0027.  Alternatively, send your
abstract by email to bosch at pop.uky.edu or to gstump at pop.uky.edu.  Please
include
the following information with your abstract: name, affiliation, address, email
address, daytime phone.  The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday,
November 15, 1999.  Authors will be notified about the conference schedule in
mid-December.

Subject:  TESOL: Papers for a book

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you to many of you for your quick responses to our call for
papers.  We have received a number of questions about our project, so
we hope this will clarify what we plan for the book.

As a reminder, and information for those of you who did not see our
first message, the book is intended to be a collection of current
articles which will acquaint teachers of ESL with the importance of
understanding the role of culture in both the teaching and learning
of English as a second or foreign language.  We are thinking of
basically two main types of papers.  One would be theoretical.  It
could be a literature review-oriented article or a description of a
research study.  The other would be applications to teaching
(materials, approaches, curriculum).  Here are the topics we are
interested in for the book:

1. the relationship between language and culture
2. the role of acculturation in language acquisition
3. culture shock and assimilation
4. prejudice and stereotypes against non-native speakers in the USA
5. the study of speech acts, e.g. apologies, compliments, discourse
patterns, etc.
6. cross-cultural miscommunication, verbal and non-verbal
7. cultural comparisons of values, assumptions, attitudes
8. teachers and students as culture bearers
9. the teaching of culture - content and approach

If you have a paper you would like us to consider, please send it by
the end of January 2000.  The paper should be in APA style and be no
longer than 15 pages, double-spaced (or a maximum of  about 4000
words).  At the lower end, at least half of that length would be
appropriate.  We would prefer a hard copy sent through snail mail or
faxed (309-438-5414).  Our mailing address is Department of English,
