non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Lectureship in English and Applied Linguistics at the British Institute
in Paris

Applications are invited for a lectureship in English and Applied
Linguistics at the British Institute in Paris, to take effect from September
15th 2000.

The Institute

The British Institute in Paris is an Institute of Advanced Study of the
University of London. It was founded as a two-way language school in
1894, then reconstituted under its present name in 1927, and incorporated
into The University of London in 1969. It consists of an English
department, with a student population of 2,200 (attending 2 to 8 hours a
week of classes); a French department, where some 300 British or English
speaking undergraduates register every year; and a Distance Education
section, where some 800 students follow variants of the conventional
classroom courses.

The English Department

There are at present 15 lecturers, 1 senior lecturer (Dr. Susan Foster-
Cohen) who is Head of Department, and 16 part time tutors. The main
activity of the department is the provision of extensive (10 to 15 week)
courses in English for general purposes to predominantly French native
speakers at all levels from beginner to bilingual. Courses are also offered
on other rhythms (e.g. two-week intensives) and in other areas (e.g. ESP,
literature). The department offers certificate and diploma level teacher
training courses, and is in the process of planning an MA in Second and
Foreign Language Teaching to which the new lecturer is expected to
contribute significantly. The department is an important centre for
examinations in France, offering both London University and UCLES
exams.

The new lecturer

The department plans to appoint an English speaker (first mother
tongue) with a doctorate and a research record and research plans
appropriate to a lecturer starting a career, preferably in an area relevant to
linguistics applied to language teaching and/or language acquisition. In
addition to searching for candidates who can offer these research
interests and can teach general English to non-native speakers, the
department would also benefit from those with experience and interests
in distance and self-access learning, CALL, literature (or advanced
language through literature) or comparative cultural studies (particularly
French/British). The successful applicant will be expected to offer 480
contact hours or equivalent over each academic session, with released
time for funded research. Every encouragement will be given to the
appointee to engage in more specialised teaching, and to research in
areas relevant to the Institute's work and academic profile. The
appointment will be made in principle at grade `A' level, with the
expectation of later advancement to grade `B'. The salary ranges
applicable at present are £16,200 to £22,500 p.a. paid monthly in French
francs. Contracts are subject to French law, and all French social
security, pension and superannuation principles are applied.

Application forms (which are available from the address below or from
the website: http://www.bip.lon.ac.uk) should be returned by 15 January
2000 to
ADMINSEC Institut Britannique de Paris
11, rue de Constantine
75340 Paris Cedex 07
