excessively long.

Last chance to participate in The Heritage Languages in America Conference!

Don't miss the Heritage Languages in America conference to be held
October 14-16, 1999, in Long Beach, California. Keynote speakers will
be Professors Joshua Fishman, Cruz Reynoso, Guadalupe Valdés, and Lily
Wong Fillmore. Nationally recognized researchers Russell Campbell,
Carol Compton, Cecilia Pino, Ana Roca, Fabián Samaniego, and Shuhan
Wang will facilitate and lead discussions. Representatives from
heritage language communities and schools, pre K-12 heritage language
educators, college and university faculty, researchers, and
organizations and businesses that employ professional staff with
language expertise will participate in the conference.

Participants will have the unprecedented opportunity to help shape the
development of the heritage language field by articulating a national
agenda on the preservation and cultivation of heritage languages as
rich national resources. This work will be facilitated by task forces
that will be established at the conference to address issues that
include articulation across programs, teacher preparation, materials
development, instructional strategies, assessment, and public
advocacy.

The Heritage Languages in America Conference is sponsored by the
Heritage Languages Initiative, a national effort by California State
University at Long Beach (CSULB), the National Foreign Language Center
(NFLC), and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) to strengthen our
educational and social institutions so that our national language
resources can be developed.

Additional information about the Heritage Languages in America
conference (conference program, registration form, information about
the Heritage Languages Initiative, and other resources) may be found
at CAL's Web site: http://www.cal.org/heritage.

To receive a conference brochure and registration form, contact Cindy
McCarty of CSULB by email at cmccarty at csulb.edu or by telephone at
562-985-4318.

There are only two weeks left to register for this important
opportunity to share knowledge and resources with some of the leading
figures in heritage language education in the United States. We hope
to see you there!
