           The Penn Linguistics Club Announces

   The Twenty-Fourth Annual Penn Linguistics Colloquium

     Saturday 26 February and Sunday 27 February 2000

     Invited Speaker:  Alan Prince, Rutgers University


Papers on any topic in linguistics and associated fields are
welcome.  This year's Colloquium will feature a special session
on the Syntax-Phonology interface and related phenomena.

Speakers will have twenty minutes for their presentations and
five minutes for discussion and questions.

Prospective speakers may submit their abstracts by E-mail or in
hard copy by conventional mail.  Abstracts should be no longer
than 2 pages in a 12-point font with 1-inch margins.  Mailed
submissions should include five copies of the abstract,
accompanied by an index card including the presenter's name,
affiliation (department and institution), address, e-mail
address and the subfield of linguistics (or related discipline)
that best characterizes the paper's topic.  In particular,
please indicate whether you would like your paper to be
considered for inclusion in the special session.  Please do not
include name or affiliation on the abstracts themselves.  E-mail
submissions should preferably be in ASCII format, or sent as
LaTeX files.  Abstracts should be sent no later than Wednesday,
1 December to:

Conference proceeding will be published as a volume of the Penn

          Fourth International Conference on Quantitative Linguistics

			    24 - 26 August, 2000
			   Prague, Czech Republic


                            FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS


The International Quantitative Linguistics Association invites the
submission of papers on substantial, original, and unpublished
research on all aspects of Quantitative Linguistics, including, but
not limited to, the following.

1. Observations and descriptions of all aspects of language and text
   phenomena, including the areas of psycholinguistics,
   sociolinguistics, dialectology, pragmatics etc. as far as they use
   quantitative mathematical methods (probability theory, stochastic
   processes, statistics, differential and difference equations, fuzzy
   logic and set theory, function theory etc.), on all levels of
   linguistic analysis.

2. Applications of methods, models, or findings from quantitative
   linguistics to problems of natural language processing, machine
   translation, language teaching, documentation and information
   retrieval.

3. Methodological problems of linguistic measurement, model
   construction, sampling and test theory.

4. Epistemological issues such as explanation of language and text
   phenomena, contributions to theory construction, system theory,
   philosophy of science.

Reports on ongoing projects are also welcome as far as they concern
any of the topics mentioned above.


REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMISSION

Papers should be sent for a 20 minute presentation (plus 10 minutes
discussion) on the above-mentioned topics, preferably in English
(German and French will be also accepted). Submissions should be
between 1000-1500 words and should begin with the title, author(s),
addresses (including e-mail if possible), affiliation and a
specification of the topic area.

Authors should send proposals for papers in camera-ready form (ASCII,
postscript, or RTF format) to the following e-mail address:

Deadline for submissions: 1 February 2000.
Note of acceptance: 15 March 2000.
