THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO
Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies

The Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, University of Texas at
San Antonio, seeks a senior scholar in the education of language
minority students with broad knowledge of and established record of
research in bilingualism, literacy, and/or biliteracy for an
associate/full professorship with tenure, pending budgetary approval,
to begin in Fall 2000. The Division offers a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Mexican American Studies, a Master of Arts degree with
concentrations in Bicultural Studies, Bicultural-Bilingual Education,
and English as a Second Language, and is expected to begin a
Ph.D. program in Culture, Literacy, and Language. It also provides
undergraduate and graduate programs for teacher certification as well
as support courses for other programs in the University. The
individual selected for this position will be expected to assume a
leadership role in implementing the new Ph.D. program.

Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses
at the UTSA Downtown or Main Campus, advising doctoral and master's
degree students, pursuing an active research agenda, and providing
leadership in the proposed doctoral program.

For appointment as Associate Professor:

Required Qualifications: Doctorate with specialization in bilingual
education, literacy, educational linguistics, applied linguistics, or
a closely related area. Extensive university teaching experience at
the graduate level. A nationally recognized record of research and
publication in one or more of the following areas: education of
language minority students; literacy and biliteracy;
bilingualism. Proficiency in Spanish and English.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in teaching or conducting
research in public schools (K-12). Record of securing external
research funding and directing funded research projects. Experience
directing graduate student research; experience in doctoral
programs. Experience in conducting research among U.S. Latino
populations. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.

For appointment as Professor:

Same required and preferred qualifications as above AND experience
directing doctoral research and a record of research and publication
sufficient to qualify for the rank of full professor at UTSA.

Appointment: Starting with the Fall 2000 semester at the level of
associate or full professor with tenure. Rank is dependent on
qualifications and experience. Salary is competitive.

The Linguistics Program of Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago
has been authorized to search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor for
September, 2000. Candidates must possess a doctorate in Linguistics by
August, 2000. Individuals with a strong background in both general
linguistics and second language acquisition with the ability to
effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses are preferred.
Please submit a CV, three letters of recommendation (including at least
one attesting to teaching skills), a brief letter describing your
interests and teaching experience, and one sample publication.
