Call for papers

First North American Phonology Conference (NAPhC)

The Linguistics Program at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec will
host the First North American Phonology Conference (NAPhC) from
April 28-30th, 2000. We are founding this conference in association with
a number of Canadian Universities in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto and we
expect the conference to be held every other year on a rotation among
these, and perhaps other, institutions in North America.

Abstract submission is invited on any area of theoretical phonology,
although, in recognition of the ten-year anniversary of the
publication of Inkelas and Zec's "Phonology-Syntax Connection",
we especially hope to have submissions on phonology above the word
level.

Papers may be submitted and presented in French or English.

We are pleased to announce that the following phonologists
have all agreed to be invited speakers at the conference:

Abigail Cohn (Cornell)
Sharon Inkelas (Berkeley)
Glyne Piggott (McGill)
Keren Rice (Toronto)
Donca Steriade (UCLA)

Accepted papers will be allotted 40 minutes, including discussion time.
Abstracts must be submitted electronically to

naphc at modlang-hale.concordia.ca

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is December 15, 1999.

Preferred formats in decreasing order are pdf, ps, plain text,
WORD (Mac or Windows), WordPerfect (Mac or Windows).
Word and Wordperfect users should use no other phonetics
fonts than SIL Doulos (available at www.sil.org). If you make a ps file
under Windows or Mac, please verify its integrity before sending it.

Further information will be available at
http://modlang-hale.concordia.ca/naphc.html

International Society for Italian Linguistics and Philology (SILFI)

                             6th International Conference

                               " Tradition & Innovation"
Italian Linguistics and Philology at the start of a New Millennium

                                 June 28th - July 2nd 2000
                       Gerhard-Mercator-Universitaet GH
                                     Duisburg, Germany

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

We cordially invite you to participate in the 6th International
Conference of the International Society for Italian Linguistics
and Philology (SILFI), which following Siena (1988), Cambridge
(1991), Perugia (1994), Madrid (1996), and Catania (1998) will
be held in Duisburg, from June 28th to July 2nd 2000.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

THE SOCIETY

SILFI, the sole international society of Italian Linguistics and
Philology was founded at a very informal level in early Sep-
tember, 1985, during the 7th International Conference on
Historical Linguistics, held at Pavia. It was founded in order
to promote the study of Italian linguistics and philology and to
bring together all those working in Italian studies in Italy and all
over the world.
The congresses of SILFI are open to all scholars working in the
vast field of Italian linguistics and philology. At the General Meeting,
the right to vote is, however, reserved to official members of SILFI.

SILFI currently has about 200 members. Membership fees cover the
two years in between two congresses. They can also be paid during
the congress
Membership fees for the period 2000-2002 are:
Students & PhD-students: 25,00 DM (ca. Euro 12,50)
others: 40,00 DM (ca. Euro 20,00)
Exchange rate: 1 EURO = ca. 2 DM
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

THEMES

In order to allow as many scholars of Italian linguistics and philology
to participate and exchange research results, research in progress, ex-
periences and ideas, congresses of SILFI are generally open to all
topics of Italian linguistics and philology. Tradition has it, however,
that each time one section of the congress is reserved in advance for
a specific topic.
Following the decision of the last congress held in Catania, the topic
of this section at the congress in Duisburg will be:

                             "italiano parlato / Spoken Italian"

As the motto of the congress in Duisburg "Tradition & Innovation"
indicates, the aim of the congress is to bring together the wealth of
know- ledge gained by using traditional resources and methodolgy with
projects which either try to exploit the possibilities offered by the
electronic media for research and teaching or try to find new ways of
integrating scientific studies with society. The topic "Spoken
Italian" seems to be an excellent starting point for such an
endeavour.

English can also be used. No translation is provided.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

THEMES OF INTEREST

SILFI, next to work on "Spoken Italian" welcomes work
across the wholefield of Italian linguistics and philology,
including (but not limited to):

- History of Italian
- Synchronic and diachronic linguistics
- Dialectology and Geolinguistics
- Diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic varieties
- Comparison between Italian and other languages
- Textual scholarship (textual anlysis, text critique, text edition ecc.)
- Language and literature

Furthermore, SILFI, in accord with the general motto of its congress
in Duisburg, encourages

- submissions of electronic or multimedial projects which can be of
interest for Italian linguistics and philology (corpora, electronic
collections of literary and non literary texts, grammars, virtual clas-
ses/universities, philological and teaching tools etc.)
- work that makes use of computing methodology
- well reflected contributions on how traditional and innovative
approaches can be combined or more active collaboration between
   them can be furthered
and
- the presentation of projects which are devoted to furthering the
integration of scientific research with society by orienting lin-
guistic and philological research to the reality of the region where
   the university is based.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

SUBMISSIONS

Submissions should be limited to original work. Work in pro-
gress is also welcome. All papers should, however, include
background survey and / or reference to previous work. Authors
are encouraged to include in their paper reflections on the relevance
of their work to the general motto of the conference "Tradition &
Innovation".
All proposals will be evaluated by the scientific committee.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

RECOMMENDED CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBMISSIONS

In the interest of fostering lively debate, we invite:

- Sessions or papers which illuminate (or incite) debates within a
field of Italian linguistics and philology
- Papers which situate projects with respect to current debates and
previous work, or explore the theoretical ramifications of new de-
  velopments
- Sessions which dramatize methodological differences, or which
  explore a variety of approaches
- Sessions or papers which show ways how traditional work, mul-
timedial projects and computing methodology can fruitfully interact

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

FORMAT OF PROPOSALS

Proposals may be of four types:

academic papers
themed panel sessions
posters
demonstrations of electronic/multimedial projects or software

The type of submission should be specified in the header of the
proposal.

PAPERS

Proposals for academic papers (1.000 -1.500 words) should
describe original work.
Those that concentrate on a particular application of com-
puting methodology in Italian linguistics and/or philology
should cite traditional as well as computer-based approaches to
the problem and should include some critical assessment of the
computing methodologies used.
All proposals should include conclusions and references,
and should indicate a familiarity with previous work in the
area.
Individual papers will be allocated 30 minutes for presentation, in-
cluding questions and discussion.
Proposals are due: December 20th, 1999

THEMED PANEL SESSIONS

Sessions (90 minutes) take the form of either:
1. Three papers on a topic, either exploring it in depth, or presenting
differing views on it. The panel organizer should make sure the session
schedule leaves room for discussion. The session organiser should
submit a 500-word statement describing the session topic, plus 1.000-
word abstracts for each paper, and indicate that each author is willing
    to participate in the session;

or

2. A panel of four to six speakers on a topic. The speakers should either
present different facets of the topic or they should introduce a debate
on it. In either case, the panel organiser should make sure that there is
enough time left for discussion among the panelists and the audience.
The panel organiser should submit an abstract of 1.000 words descri-
bing the panel topic, how it will be organised, the names of all the
speakers, and an indication that each speaker is willing to participate
   in the session.
Proposals are due: December 20th, 1999

POSTERS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

Poster presentations and demonstrations of electronic/multimedial projects
or software are designed to give researchers an opportunity to present late-
breaking results, significant work in progress, well-defined problems, or
research that is best communicated in conversational mode.
By definition, poster presentations are less formal and more interactive
than a standard talk. Poster presenters have the opportunity to exchange
ideas one-on-one with attendees and to discuss their work in detail with
those most deeply interested in the same topic. Each presenter is provi-
ded with about 2 square metres of board space to display their work.
They may also provide handouts with examples or more detailed infor-
mation. Posters will remain on display throughout the conference, but
a block of time separate from paper sessions will be assigned when pre-
senters should be prepared to explain their work and answer questions.
Specific time will also be assigned for project or software demonstrations.
Proposals for posters and demos should be about 500 words long, and
should indicate the type of hardware, if any, that would be required if
the proposal were accepted. These proposals should also include an
indication of the relation of this research to previous and related work.
Proposals are due: January 10th, 2000
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
