The Dept. of East Asian Languages and Literatures seeks applicants for a
tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in the areas of
Japanese linguistics, language pedagogy, and second language acquisition.
Candidates should be prepared to offer graduate courses in such areas and
undergraduate language courses. The position begins September
16, 2000. Required are a Ph.D. in Japanese linguistics, general or
applied, and native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English.
Desired are excellence in teaching and originality of research. To apply,
please send a statement of research and teaching interests, CV, and three

Subject: Japanese (computational) linguist - Linguistic database entry
Seeking a motivated and energetic Japanese (computational) linguistic
expert to assist our effort to enhance lexical data.
A robust NLP system development requires larger resource sets such as
grammar rules, lexicon, etc.
This linguistic database entry person utilizes a lexicon augmentation
tool to add lexical information of words in a linguistic database. To
fulfill the responsibilities, proper linguistic training in Japanese
linguistics and certain amount of knowledge in computational
linguistics (NLP) is required. In addition, very cautious attitude
toward data is essential since the data size and the size of files to
be handled will be extremely large. Since this project is not a
research-oriented one, we would like to emphasize the importance of
the cost consciousness on the tasks.
Tasks:
[1] Augmenting linguistic information in a lexicon
[a] Preparing word lists from our frequency database.
[b] Entering lexical information of words listed in the frequency data in
[a] by using our tool
[c] Managing consistency on data by using our tool
[d] Check in the data entered by preparing files to be used in our lexicon
building
[2] Updating and correcting lexical information on error-reported entries
[a] Debugging the source of lexical information error.
[a] Verifying effects of proposed fixes.
[b] Preparing files for checkin.
Skills Required: Requirement:
[1] knowledge of Japanese grammar
Lexical knowledge of Japanese words
theoretical knowledge of Japanese grammar(lexicon and morphology)
[2] knowledge of natural language processing
knowledge of parsing
knowledge of lexicon and morphology analysis
academic course work in computational linguistics is a plus
[3] experience in handling and managing large database and large sets of
text files
experience in using ACCESS/Excel for large data sets
0-2 years work related experience required. Relevant technical ability
required. Strong communication skills required. May require an advanced
knowledge of technology in one area and moderate level skills in multiple
areas. Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related
technical field required.
