Call for Papers: 29th Annual LASSO Conference

Abstracts are now being accepted for the 2000 meeting of the
Linguistic Association of the Southwest (LASSO).  Papers on any topic
in linguistics will be considered, though submissions on the
conference theme of "Minority Languages in the Americas" are
particularly encouraged.  Abstracts may be in English or in Spanish.

The abstract deadline is June 1, 2000.  Send submissions
to <hboertien at uh.edu>.

The conference will be held in Puebla, Mexico, from
October 13-15, 2000.

SYMBOLS, SYMBOL PROCESSING and NEURAL NETWORKS

Topics to be covered in the special session include:
symbol processing and the nature of symbols. Not specifically language
processing but

- how the biological brain handles symbols
- how symbols can be stored
- how symbols can be manipulated
- the definition of symbols
- how artifical neural networks can be trained using symbols

However, any topic relevant to symbols and symbol processing will
be considered for discussion.
Interested researchers should submit manuscripts of up to 5,000 words.

PROCEEDINGS AND PUBLICATIONS
All accepted and invited papers will be included in the congress

for possible inclusion in special issues of some prestigious journals.
