Dear Linguists,
In our attempt to inform you about Linguist services, we counted
Conf and Calls issues. And we were surprised to discover that
Linguist posted 348 Calls for Papers issues in 1999 and 227
Conference Announcement issues. But read on...
Most of the Calls issues contained at least 2 announcements, so
our best estimate is that Linguist posted 696 Calls for Papers in
1999.
And, what's more ....
Although the conference issues typically contain only a single
announcement, many posters combine the conference
announcement with a Call for Papers; and in that case we post the
announcement as a Call. (Our thinking is that this is the best way
to alert potential speakers & conference contributors.)
So in order to estimate the number of 1999 conferences in
linguistics, we think it would be better to start with the number of
Calls (698) than the number of conference announcements. From
these, we should subtract the number of Calls for manuscripts for
special journal issues ( 20) and the number of Calls with the strings
"2nd," "Second," "Third," and "Final" Call in them (46). But this
still leaves a total of 632!
Now, admittedly, this is not a very scientific method of estimation.
Nevertheless, aren't you suprised that the discipline of linguistics
hosted ANYTHING LIKE 632 conference last year? We certainly
were. Remember that Linguist does not announce local colloquia or
meetings, only regional, national, or international conferences. So
even if our calculations are off by, say, 100 conferences, we are
still left with a rather staggering number of significant linguistics
gatherings.
But, of course, Linguist announces conferences taking place across the
globe. Most of us probably formed our idea of the size of the
conference-going community from the number of announcements we used to
encounter in our local or national linguistics publications. The
Internet has changed all this. And we like to think that, in our
academic discipline, The Linguist List has played a part.
Conference organizers have sometimes told us that, in the last 5-7
years, their conference attendance has become more international and
the general quality of the papers has improved because of the
increasing number of submissions. If so, perhaps these benefits have
accrued to linguistics in part because the discipline supports a
central international email list with over 12,000 subscribers. And
that is--you guessed it!--The Linguist List.
But The Linguist List exists only so long as it IS supported by the
discipline. Although Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan
University provide generous administrative support, we also require a
9-member student staff, which is funded primarily by subscriber
donations. This year, as many of you know by now, we determined that
we need $35,000 to continue to fund these deserving students and
continue to keep Linguist running. This is the 6th day of our fund
drive; and so far we have collected $25,374, thanks to the generosity of
the persons and institutions whose names are listed at the bottom of
this page. This means that we still need $9,626 to maintain the level of
service that you have come to expect.
If you have not yet contributed, will you please do so now? As a
501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.
You can donate via our secure credit card form at:

immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach
our goal (and halt these annoying Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier.
