LECTURESHIP/SENIOR LECTURESHIP IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
AND LINGUISTICS

Applications are invited for a Lectureship or Senior Lectureship (ref.
237/00) in the Department of English and American Studies in the
School of English and Linguistics at the University of Manchester,
starting date 1 September 2000. The post is initially funded for five
years. Candidates should have research interests in language contact
and variety, sociolinguistics and dialect study. An interest in
discourse analysis and/or the history of English and related languages
would be an advantage. The salary will be in the range £17,238 -
£30,065 if the appointment is at Lecturer level or £31,563 -
£35,670y"f at Senior Lecturer.

The post is in part a replacement for Professor Richard Hogg, who
holds a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship for two years from
September 2000, and in part to help develop the new English Language
degree programme in the School of English and Linguistics (first
intake September 2001). The post is initially funded for five years.
The appointee will be located in the Department of English and
American Studies but will be expected to contribute also to teaching
in the Department of Linguistics, our sister department in the School
of English and Linguistics.

We are particularly looking to strengthen the School's position in
Language Contact and Variety, and in particular our undergraduate and
postgraduate provision in English Language Studies. The appointment is
likely to be on the Lecturer scale but for an exceptional candidate
could be at Senior Lecturer level. The person appointed will be
expected to contribute to undergraduate and to postgraduate teaching,
and to be active in research. It is hoped, but there is no guarantee,
that a successful appointment might be renewed after the initial
period.
