Si le sens linguistique est parfois considere avec mefiance en linguistique
moderne, un ensemble de recherches independantes se sont neanmoins
interessees a l'organisation du sens dans les langues naturelles. Cette
organisation est notamment mise en cause par des phenomenes comme la
polysemie, la grammaticalisation, le rôle pour l'interpretation de la
syntaxe, la conventionnalisation du sens pragmatique, l'organisation de la
metonymie, la structuration de la metaphore, au regard par exemple de la
variation synchronique et historique, typologique et sociale.
Le colloque REPRESENTATIONS DU SENS LINGUISTIQUE, qui se tiendra a
l'universite de Bucarest du 25 au 27 mai 2001, se propose de faire l'etat
des lieux des differentes reponses qui ont ete apportees et qui restent a
apporter a la question de la nature des contraintes et representations que
doit interioriser un locuteur pour maitriser les differents aspects de la
composante semantique d'une langue. Seront en particulier considerees la
nature des representations du semantique, les regularites dont elles
rendent compte et surtout les eventuelles contraintes generales qui pesent
sur ces representations. Les chercheurs suivants ont deja confirme leur

Sont invitees des propositions pour des communication de 30 minutes,
avancant une modelisation d'un domaine empirique defini. Outre une page
d'information indiquant le nom et l'adresse complete des auteurs ainsi que
le titre de la communication, la proposition comprendra un resume anonyme
de 500 mots donnant le titre de la communication et presentant la
problematique, les donnees considerees, le cadre d'analyse, les hypotheses,
les resultats et leur pertinence generale pour le theme du colloque; c'est
sur la base de ces elements que seront evalues les resumes. Les
propositions de communication doivent parvenir par courriel ou par la poste
avant le 1er septembre 2000 a:

At the 22nd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Linguistics
(DGfS) in Leipzig (February 28 - March 2, 2001) there will be a
workshop on "The Influence of Lexical Information on Sentence
Comprehension" (for a description of the workshop, see below or at
the meeting's website http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~dgfs2001/index.html ).
We invite abstracts for 30 minutes (20 minutes + 10 minutes discussion)
presentations.

***** Description of the Workshop ******
The Influence of Lexical Information on Sentence Comprehension
A major issue in psycholinguistic research on comprehending spoken
or written language concerns the role played by item-specific, lexical
information. Despite intensive research, it is still controversial whether
there is a stage of syntactic analysis where a syntactic representation is
constructed using only general syntactic knowledge and minimal lexical
information (e.g., concerning the lexical categories of words), or
whether syntactic analysis is guided by the whole range of lexical
information from the beginning. This workshop will give the
opportunity to present current empirical research on the use of lexically
encoded information (from e.g. eye-tracking and reaction time studies,
or studies measuring event-related potentials (ERP)), and to discuss
the consequences of this research for models of the human sentence
processing mechanism.
Topics that might be addressed in the workshop include:
- How is the information that verbs contribute to the syntactic
representation of sentences used for purposes of first- and second-
pass parsing?
- How does the human parsing mechanism cope with syntactic
structures which are not (yet) lexically licensed (e.g. by the verb's
argument structure)?
- How are verb-final clauses processed?
- Are there language-particular differences in the use of lexical
information?
- How should the time course of lexical and syntactic processing be
modelled?
- Is it possible to use evidence gathered in psycho- or neurolinguistic
experiments in order to constraint grammatical models of the
interface between the lexicon and syntax?
- Is the use of lexical information influenced by prosodic or by
contextual information?
This workshop will be of interest to psycho- and neurolinguists as well
as to theoretical linguists interested in the interplay between the lexicon
and syntax.
