This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the linguistics of
Korean. It presents essential facts about the language: its speakers,
its relation to other languages of the world, historical development,
dialects (including the differences between South and North Korean),
writing systems, the composition and structure of words, and sound
patterns and syntax. It provides a wealth of examples and
user-friendly descriptions that do not presuppose advanced knowledge
of either linguistic theory or Korean on the part of the reader.
Contents:
1. Introduction; 2. Genetic affiliation; 3. Historical development;
4. Dialects; 5. Lexicon; 6. Writing systems; 7. Sound patterns;
8. Word structure; 9. Grammatical structure.

This book is a comprehensive and authoritative survey of Native North
American languages. These several hundred languages show tremendous
genetic and typological diversity, and offer numerous challenges to
current linguistic theory. The book includes an overview of their
special characteristics, descriptions of special styles, and a
catalogue of the languages detailing their locations, genetic
affiliations, number of speakers, and major structural features, and
listing published material on them.
Contents:
Introduction; Part I. The Nature of the Languages: 1. Sounds and sound
patterns; 2. Words; 3. Grammatical categories; 4. Sentences;
5. Special language; Part II. Catalogue of Languages: 6. Relations
among the languages; 7. Catalogue.

The Amazon Basin is the least known and the most complex linguistic
region in the world today. It is the home of some 300 languages many
of which (often incompletely documented and mostly endangered) show
properties that constitute exceptions to received ideas about
linguistic universals. This book is the first in English to provide an
accessible overview of this rich and exciting linguistic area. It will
provide a basis for further research on Amazonian languages as well as
a point of entry to important data for theoreticallinguists.
