AIM
The International Conference on "Modality in Contemporary English"
will be held in Verona, Italy, on 6-8 September 2001.  The conference
aims at fostering interaction between scholars from different
theoretical backgrounds but with a common interest in English
modality, with specific reference to the Present-day, hence promoting
discussions, exchanging ideas and reporting recent progress on a
variety of issues related to this field.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Paper proposals are welcomed on all aspects of verbal and non-verbal
modality in Present-day English. We particularly solicit work describing
research in the following fields:

- syntax and semantics of modal elements
- modality and phonetics / prosody
- modality and sociolinguistics
- modality and pragmatics
- modality and language teaching

Authors should submit an anonymous abstract of at most 3 A4 pages,
including figures/tables and references, together with a separate page
specifying the author's names, affiliation, surface mail address, and
e-mail address.

We strongly encourage electronic submission (.doc, .txt, .rtf, .pdf),
preferably as an attachment. Please, send abstracts to:
Prof. Roberta Facchinetti (faro at chiostro.univr.it). If sent by surface mail,
please include disk.
Deadline for abstracts submission: 28th February 2001
Notification of acceptance: 30th March, 2001

WORKSHOP: "Modal expressions in ICE-GB: issues of retrieval"
In conjunction with the conference, a workshop will be held by Bas Aarts
(Reader in Modern English Language, University College London) and Sean
Wallis (Research Fellow, University College London). The workshop will
introduce the ICE-GB corpus, discuss how to retrieve a variety of modality
features by means of the programme ICECUP, specifically developed for the
corpus, and finally provide a hands-on session allowing delegates to
experiment with the corpus and the software themselves.

The venue of the conference will be the University of Verona, located near
the historical centre of the town and within walking distance to most
hotels. The Language Centre and the Faculty of Arts have new, well-equipped,
airy classrooms for the conference. Internet access will be provided for all
the delegates throughout the conference.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME
There will be a full social programme, including university reception, a
tour of Verona, conference dinner, and a whole day excursion to Venice
(post-conference tour).

  		 SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS:

   FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CONSTRUCTION GRAMMAR

		    April 6-8, 2001

      University of California at Berkeley

Reflecting the rapidly growing interest in Construction Grammar, this
conference will serve as a forum for promoting discussion and
collaboration among linguists interested in this line of research.  As
a way of acknowledging its roots and in recognition of the Berkeley
scholars who have been instrumental in developing the constructional
research program, the conference will feature three plenary talks by

	Charles Fillmore, UC Berkeley
	Paul Kay, UC Berkeley
	George Lakoff, UC Berkeley

The diversity of constructional research in its various models and
applications will be featured in the talks of the following invited
speakers:

	Seizi Iwata, Gifu University, Japan
	Knud Lambrecht, University of Texas at Austin
	Ronald Langacker, University of California at San Diego
	Ivan Sag, Stanford University
	Arnold Zwicky, Stanford University

Regular conference papers (20-min. talk plus 10-min.  discussion) are
invited on any aspect of linguistic analysis that is concerned with
constructions and/or frames.  We welcome work on issues in syntax,
morphology, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, language acquisition,
corpus linguistics, language variation/change, etc.  We also encourage
interdisciplinary contributions from fields that intersect with
linguistics and to which the notion of constructions is relevant.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS:

Abstracts of 500 words, with an additional page for graphs, data,
and/or reference if necessary, should be submitted by January 15th,
2001.  If you are submitting by regular mail, please provide 5 copies
of your anonymous abstract with the title of the paper at the top and
a 3" x 5" index card including the following information: author's
name and affiliation, title of paper, mailing address, and e-mail
address.  All should be mailed to:

If submitting electronically (in ASCII, making sure that special
formatting, characters, diacritics, etc. are not a problem), please
send the text of your abstract to iccg2001 at ICSI.Berkeley.EDU and
include the author information listed above as part of your
message. Upon acceptance, authors will be requested to submit a short
descriptive abstract (150 words) for a conference booklet to be
distributed among the conference participants.
