We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

I seem to remember somewhere that in the introduction to an edition of
Virgil's Aeneid, the editor said "we do not really know enough Latin to
determine how far Virgl was going with his changes of mood", or somehing
like that. Wiould anyone know the exact quote?
Thanks in advance,
Robert Orr

Dear Colleagues,
Does anybody know of any studies done on the suffixes used in e.g. English
to derive adjectives from proper nouns such as personal names or the names
of countries? I'm particularly interested in any patterns that may have
been observed in the selection of suffixes from lists
like -(i)an, -ese, -esque, -ite, etc.
If i get some interesting reponses i'll post a summary.
Best,
Steven
