The Center for Human-Computer Communication has 3 positions to announce:

Linguistics Internship in Prosodic Analysis of Spoken Language

Applications are invited from outstanding linguistics graduate students
with an interest in spoken dialogue, HCI, and prosodic analysis of speech
signals for a 10-week full-time internship position during the Winter or
Spring of 2001. Funding for this internship is sponsored by the National
Science Foundation, and is part of a larger NSF project entitled
"Interactive Multimodal Interfaces: Designing for Human Performance."
Students selected will participate in an interdisciplinary, team-oriented
research project investigating people's spoken and multimodal input to
interactive computer systems. Applicants with a background in linguistics,
especially in prosodic analysis of spoken language, are strongly
encouraged to apply. Students with a background in computer science,
cognitive science, psychology, or human factors also will be considered if
their primary interest and experience is in spoken dialogue, speech
technology, HCI, and speech signal analysis. Experience working with human
subjects, scoring and analyzing language-oriented behavior, and using data
analysis/statistics software also would be relevant to the project.

Research Assistant ~ Linguist (position #CHCC8-1-00)

The research assistant will participate in a multidisciplinary,
team-oriented research project investigating users' spoken, pen-based, and
multimodal input to interactive computer systems. Applicants with a
background and interest in linguistics, especially in prosodic analysis of
spoken dialogue, are strongly encouraged to apply, although candidates with
a background in cognitive science, psychology, human factors/engineering,
or computer science also will be considered. Candidate must be experienced
with speech signal analysis, including collection and preparation of
speech data, use of speech signal analysis software, and speech signal
analysis conventions. Experience testing and interviewing human subjects
(including children), scoring and analyzing language-oriented data, using
data analysis/statistics software, and performing basic programming for
experimental support also are relevant skills for this research position.
Experience with MS Word for text processing, database programs such as MS
Access, graphics software (Illustrator, Photoshop) for preparing
publications, and HTML or web design would be a plus. Prefer applicants
with an M.A. in linguistics, plus 2 years work experience in an academic or
corporate research setting.

Research Assistant (position #CHCC1-1-01)

We currently seek a research assistant-linguist to codify and study
multimodal human-human interaction.  The research to be conducted here is
supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.  The RA will
participate in a multidisciplinary, team-oriented research project
investigating users' spoken, hand gestured, and multimodal input. Applicants
with a background/interest in linguistics, especially with a background in
sign language, are preferred. Experience with collection, transcription, and
preparation of speech data is essential, and collection and analysis of
videotaped data of human hand gestures is preferred.  Experience testing and
interviewing human subjects, scoring and analyzing language-oriented data,
using data analysis/statistics software, and performing basic programming in
C or Java on PC's for experimental support also are relevant skills.
Experience with MS Word, database programs, graphics software, and HTML a
plus.  Prefer applicants with an M.A. in linguistics, plus 2 years work
experience in an academic or corporate, or government research setting.
