Job Title: Usability Engineer
Job Description:
The successful candidate will advise Conversa on the principles of
interface design and perform in-person experiments to evaluate the
effectiveness of Conversa's product interfaces. The candidate
will also design and conduct in-person experiments to analyze the
effectiveness of Conversa's proprietary speech technology.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
· Locate subjects representative of targeted end users
· Provide data on end-user acceptance of design/engineering options
· Provide data on end-user subjective evaluation of Conversa's
proprietary text-to-speech engine for multiple languages.
· Provide data on the accuracy of Conversa's proprietary speech
recognition engine for multiple users in different environments for
multiple languages.
· Perform any other duties which may be assigned or necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Thorough knowledge of statistics, speech perception, and psychology
· Experience with designing and conducting human experiments
· Knowledge of proper treatment of human subjects in experiments
· Principles of software interface design
· Knowledge of Visual Basic or other tools for creating graphical
interfaces
· Familiarity with the design cycle of software
Education, Certification, Training and/or Minimum Qualifications
· Ph.D. in Psychology, Speech Science, or related field
· Strong statistical background
· At least 2 years experience with human subjects and experimental
design
Additional Information (travel requirements, physical requirements, etc)
· Able to work with limited supervision
· Able to communicate effectively with scientists, developers, and
marketers to publicize usability data
· Self-motivated
· Willing to relocate to Redmond, Washington

The Department of Linguistics at California State University, Fresno
announces a one-year position in syntax, as follows:
1. Proposed Appointment: LECTURER
2. Available for the Academic Year 2000 - 01 ; Fall 2000 ; Spring 2001 .
3. Salary: Placement on the salary schedule is dependent upon
academic preparation and professional experience.
4. Teaching Load: 12 semester units.
5. Course Level: Undergraduate and Graduate
6. Specific Position Characteristics:
The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen the department's
offerings in syntax. Familiarity with diverse syntactic frameworks is
desired.
Secondary areas of interest might include historical linguistics,
morphology, or language acquisition. The successful candidate may be
called upon to teach in a distance education mode. The successful
candidate will be expected to work cooperatively with faculty and staff in
the department
and school.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or ABD in Linguistics with an emphasis in
syntax is required.
2. Teaching or other professional experience: Candidates should demonstrate
a commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate
levels as well as a strong interest in research and publication. They must
have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from
diverse backgrounds. Candidates with successful grant writing experience
are encouraged to apply.
