Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing

Christopher D. Manning and Hinrich Schütze

Statistical approaches to processing natural language text have become
dominant in recent years. This foundational text is the first
comprehensive introduction to statistical natural language processing
(NLP) to appear. The book contains all the theory and algorithms
needed for building NLP tools. It provides broad but rigorous coverage
of mathematical and linguistic foundations, as well as detailed
discussion of statistical methods, allowing students and researchers
to construct their own implementations. The book covers collocation
finding, word sense disambiguation, probabilistic parsing, information
retrieval, and other applications.

Christopher D. Manning is Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at
the University of Sydney, Australia. Hinrich Schütze is on the
Research Staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.

The Syntax of American Sign Language

Functional Categories and Hierarchical Structure

Carol Neidle, Judy Kegl, Dawn MacLaughlin, Benjamin Bahan, and Robert
G. Lee

Recent research on the syntax of signed languages has revealed that,
apart from some modality-specific differences, signed languages are
organized according to the same underlying principles as spoken
languages. This book addresses the organization and distribution of
functional categories in American Sign Language (ASL), focusing on
tense, agreement, and wh-constructions.

Carol Neidle is Associate Professor of Linguistics at Boston
University. Judy Kegl is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the
University of Southern Maine. Dawn MacLaughlin is a Research Associate
in Linguistics at Boston University. Benjamin Bahan is Associate
Professor and Chair of the Department of Deaf Studies, with a joint
appointment in ASL, Linguistics, and Interpretation, at Gallaudet
University. Robert G. Lee is a doctoral student at Boston University
and a certified ASL-English interpreter.
