DEPARTMENT OF THEORETICAL AND APPLIED LINGUISTICS
Lecturer in Sociolinguistics
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at the
University of Edinburgh is seeking to hire someone at lecturer level
who has expertise in the area of sociolinguistics.
The area of specialisation is open, but may cover one of: 'Global English(es)'
language and gender;
language standardisation;
sociolinguistics of language teaching;
sociolinguistics of translation.
Expertise in the analysis of written or spoken texts or corpora is
desirable, as is experience in the sociolinguistic study of languages
and texts both in English and in a language other than English. The
successful applicant will have a proven research record, and be
committed to developing teaching in sociolinguistics and textual
analysis at postgraduate and undergraduate levels within an applied
and general linguistics context. Ideally, the successful candidate
will be interested in developing interdisciplinary links within the
department and with other units in the university.
The appointment will be made on the Lecturer A scale (£17,238 - £22,579 pa) or
exceptionally on the Lecturer B scale (£23,521 - £30,065 pa).

Subject: General Linguistics: Assistant Prof. at U of Toronto, Canada
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto is seeking an
assistant professor for a one year term, beginning in September 2000,
with a possible extension to a second year. Responsibilities include
teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and possible
involvement in graduate supervision.
Courses to be drawn from the following: introduction to language,
structure of English, phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics,
quantitative methods in linguistics.
Teaching load: Two full course equivalent (four semester) courses during
the academic year 2000-2001 plus one full course equivalent in the
summer 2001
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in linguistics
teaching experience preferred
