Job Description:	Full-time researcher (3 years, starting
 			spring/summer 2000, starting salary £22,500)

Project Title:		The Development of Language Processing
 			in Children and Adults

The project investigates the development of parsing mechanisms in child
first language (L1) learners and adult second language (L2) learners.
Two areas of sentence processing will be studied, *ambiguity resolution*
and *filler-gap dependencies*. The project will make use of experimental
paradigms from the sentence processing literature and apply them to 4-8
year old monolingual English children, and to German and Chinese adult
L2 learners of English. Off-line tasks (grammaticality judgement and
elicited production) will be used in order to assess the learners'
linguistic competence in the relevant grammatical domain. On-line tasks
(such as self-paced reading and listening, and cross-modal priming) will
provide the crucial experimental data on syntactic processing in real
time.

Applicants should
- have a good background in linguistics
- be familiar with experimental research methods and statistics
- have a good command of English
- be comfortable working with children
- be computer-literate, and willing to supervise our laboratory
- hold a postgraduate degree in a relevant field (linguistics,
  psychology, cognitive science).
