Pending budgetary authorization, the Department of Linguistics at
the University of California, Berkeley, hopes to make a temporary
syntax appointment for the 2000-2001 academic year (with a
possibility of renewal for an additional year).  Candidates should
have demonstrated excellence in teaching, a broad intellectual
engagement with the field of linguistics, and a theoretically
informed research specialization in some area of syntax.  The
ideal candidate's interests and experience will intersect with
existing research at Berkeley, especially in semantics, morphology,
or a language area such as American Indian, Sino-Tibetan, or
Celtic languages.

Title and salary for this full-time appointment will be
commensurate with experience.  Duties will include teaching
3-4 courses (including an undergraduate course and a research
seminar) as well as graduate advising in syntax.  The Ph.D. is
required by July 1, 2000.

University Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer in Classics (Linguistics and
Philology)



Applications for this post (to start on 1 October 2000) are invited from
suitably qualified and experienced candidates. The Linguistics and
Philology section of the Faculty is responsible for teaching descriptive
linguistics of Greek and Latin for Part I of the Classical Tripos, and the
historical linguistics of the two languages and comparative linguistics of
the Indo-European languages for Part II, as well as for supervising
graduate students working in these fields.  The successful candidate will
be required to take a full part in these activities and to engage in
research relevant to the teaching programme.

The pensionable scale of stipend for a University Lecturer is £20,811,
rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095, and for a University
Assistant Lecturer, £17,238, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.
