The English Department of the University of Prince Edward Island
invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in
English Linguistics, tenure track. In addition, candidates should
have a strong teaching interest in one or more of the following
areas: rhetoric, literature before 1800, research methods in English,
and theatre. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or be very close to
completion. For this position, excellence in teaching is as
important as scholarly accomplishment. Instructors in the department
teach six single-semester course, undergraduate courses annually --
normally three upper-level, specialized courses, and three
introductory, survey, or composition courses.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts,
York University, invites applications for a contractually limited
(two-year) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Linguistics,
commencing July 1, 2000. Qualifications: Ph.D., strong research record,
publications and demonstrable teaching ability. Candidates primary area
of specialization will be in the area of quantitative sociolinguistics and
language variation and change. As well, the candidate will have a
secondary specialization in phonology. In addition to teaching
responsibilities at the undergraduate level, the successful applicant may
be expected to teach in our graduate programme in Theoretical and Applied
Linguistics.
An up-to-date curriculum vitae must accompany the
application. Applicants should include a representative selection of
published work, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation and
copies of peer and student teaching evaluations sent, by the deadline,
