Director of the Hawai'i English Language Program, Position #85183T,
Department of Second Language Studies (formerly ESL), University of
Hawai'i at Manoa; special funds, full time 11-month; pending position
approval, to begin July 2001, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Non-tenurable. Continuation subject to staffing requirements,
availability of funds, and satisfactory performance.
Duties:
Direct the Hawai'i English Language Program (HELP), an intensive
English program administered by the Department of Second Language
Studies. HELP is a full-time noncredit program designed for highly
motivated individuals who wish to improve their English skills for
academic, business, or professional needs. The Department offers an MA
in ESL, a PhD in Second Language Acquisition, and an Advanced Graduate
Certificate in Second Language Studies. HELP is integrated into the
research and teacher-education functions of the Department, which is
widely considered to be a leader in the field. The HELP Director is a
faculty member of the Department of SLS and reports to the Chair of
the Department. The HELP Director is responsible for designing and
supervising the curriculum, for course scheduling, for staff selection
and supervision, for budget, student recruitment, and external
relations. The Director is expected to be able to participate in the
Department's research programs and to teach occasional graduate and
undergraduate courses in his or her specialty, as well as occasional
courses in HELP itself. Continuing employment and promotion depend on
the health of the program as well as the performance of the Director.
Minimum qualifications (all ranks):
Doctorate in applied linguistics or related field by July 2001. A
minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional
experience in teacher development, curriculum, or educational
administration; thorough knowledge of language-pedagogical theory and
practices; ability to supervise and provide developmental
opportunities for instructional staff; effective communication skills,
both oral and written; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with departmental and university faculty, staff,
and lecturers; ability to manage budget and personnel procedures.
Minimum qualifications (Associate Specialist S-4):
Minimum five years relevant research, teaching, or administrative
experience at the college level. Proven ability to administer a strong
English language program.
Desirable qualifications (all ranks):
Scholarly publications in books and journals; familiarity with
research procedures; demonstrated involvement in the ESL professional
community; demonstrated success in student recruitment; experience
with U.S. immigration regulations.
Salary:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum for Assistant
Specialist (11-month) $40,524; minimum for Associate Specialist
(11-month) $51,264.

University of Hawai'i at Manoa; full time, 11-month, non-tenurable,
pending position availability and funding, to begin August 2001, or as
soon as possible thereafter. The initial appointment is for one year.
Subsequent renewal is dependent in part on obtaining external funding.
Duties:
Form and direct a research unit in applied studies in creoles and
non-standard language varieties, housed within the Department,
responsible for establishing, implementing, and seeking external
funding for its research agenda; perform research on creoles and
non-standard language varieties in educational and/or other
institutional contexts. The researcher may also teach occasional
graduate and undergraduate courses in the field of specialization.
Minimum qualifications (all ranks):
Doctorate in second language acquisition, applied linguistics or
related field by August 2001. Publications in leading journals in the
field. Expertise in creoles or other non-standard language varieties
in Hawaii and the Pacific. Proven ability to generate independent
research reports, publications and grant proposals and to win
competitive research funding. Personal skills needed to lead a
research team.
Minimum qualifications (Associate Researcher R-4):
Minimum five years research experience at the college level. Strong
record of publications in leading refereed journals in the
field. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities.
Desirable qualifications (all ranks):
Teaching experience in applied linguistics at the college level.
Salary:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum for Assistant
Researcher (11-month) $40,524; minimum for Associate Researcher
(11-month) $51,264.
