Subject:  Mooted Italian spelling reform

Does anyone have any specifics about recent (? when) attempts to reform
Italian spelling by using acute accents for closed vowels and grave for
open ones. How long has this been advocated? How much success is it
meeting? (E.g., Are any leading publications using it?) Are there any
other items in the agenda? And what should editors in English who have to
mention places (e.g., churches dedicated to the Holy Trinity, which
traditionally was spelled Trinità, but which the reformers apparently
want to spell Trìnita) or book titles do when such variant spellings are
employed by authors? I had one author who insisted, not merely that the
reformed spelling _should_ be used, but that it really always had been,
but everybody got it wrong. Many thanks for any help.

I will be in the field the first part of next year, out of range of
electricity for about three months, working with bilingual education.  I
would like to have a computer with me, preferably with a printer.  I
would like to have it solar powered.  Do any of you have experience along
these lines?  Any information would be most appreciated.
