The linguistic construction of Europe: migrant elites and the cultural
functions of English.
The focus of this colloquium is on the linguistic identity of Europe and its
emerging multilingual elite. The main questions are:
· is there a new "itinerant" culture of highly skilled migrants in Europe?
· what role does multilingualism play in the construction of the ethnic
identity of this new mobile middle class?
· to what extent is this new middle class an agent of a new European identity?
· what is the role of English in the process of constructing Europe's
linguistic identity?
We are looking for papers on these questions from scholars from a wide range
of disciplines like Linguistics/ Sociolinguistics, Anthropology, Cultural
Geography and History. A final panel discussion will be held after the paper
session(s) to discuss the questions raised above.
