             COGNITIVE SCIENCE SOCIETY CONFERENCE 2000

		     CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

			   CogSci2000
			August 13-15, 2000

You are cordially invited to join us for the 22nd Annual Meeting of the
Cognitive Science Society, hosted by the Institute for Research in Cognitive
Science at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA,
August 13-15, 2000.  Philadelphia is a dynamic urban center as well as one of
the most historic destinations in the country, and we hope that all conference
attendees will take advantage of the opportunities in the city as well as at
the conference itself.

The meeting will take place in three full days on August 13-15th, preceded by
two days of tutorials on August 11-12th.

There will be two plenary talks, the first, "The symbolic foundations of
conditioned behavior," given by Randy Gallistel, UCLA, and the second, "Spoken
Language Systems and Human Communication," given by James Allen, University of
Rochester.

The main conference program will be preceded by two days of tutorials on August
11th and 12th (details can be found at

	* The Two Visual Systems and their Interactions
	  (Organizer: Bruce Bridgeman, University of California, Santa Cruz)

	* An introduction to the COGENT Cognitive Modelling Environment
	  (Organizer: Dr. Richard Cooper, Birkbeck College, England)

	* Cognitive Modeling and Simulation in Real-Time/Multi-tasking Domains
	  Using the COGNET Framework
	  (Organizer: Wayne Zachary, CHI Systems)

	* Cognitive Neuroscience for Cognitive Scientists
	  (Organizer: Martha Farah, University of Pennsylvania)

	* Cognitive Science and Education: Creating, Implementing, and Funding
	  Collaborations to Build a Cognitive Science Foundation for Teaching
	  and Learning
	  (Organizer: Christine Massey, IRCS, University of Pennsylvania)

The program for the conference will comprise over 95 refereed paper
presentations, and there will be two poster sessions on the first two evenings
of the conference, August 13th and 14th.  Rather than having a banquet this
year, both of the poster sessions will include a light buffet reception and
cocktail bar (one alcoholic drink or two soft drink tickets will be included,
and tickets for drinks beyond that will be available for purchase).

In addition, four invited symposia will take place during the main conference

	* Perspectives on Conceptual Change
	  (Chair: David Kaufman, UC Berkeley)

	* The Nature of Human Errors
	  (Chair: Jiajie Zhang, UT Houston)

	* The Role of the Cerebellum in Cognition and Affect
	  (Chair: Natika Newton, Nassau Community College)

	* Bayesian Approaches to Cognitive Modeling
	  (Co-Chairs: Michael C. Mozer, University of Colorado at Boulder and
	  Joshua Tenenbaum, Stanford University)


REGISTRATION INFORMATION

The registration fee for society members is $170, and includes a copy of the
proceedings, admission to all conference programs, break refreshments, and the
2 poster sessions/buffet receptions.

Note: There will be a $50 charge for registrations after July 15, 2000 and an
additional $50 charge for on-site registration.

The Philadelphia International Airport is less than 20 minutes (barring traffic
problems) by train or taxi from the University of Pennsylvania campus and the
Inn at Penn.

Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, the main train station, is a 3 to 5 minute
taxi or subway ride from the University of Pennsylvania campus and the Inn at
Penn.

The hotel rooms we have blocked will be released in early July, so please try
to make your arrangements as soon as possible.  Please mention CogSci2000 when

DORM ROOMS: You must specify on your registration form if you will require dorm
housing and how many nights you will need. The deadline for dorm room
registration is July 19, 2000.
