Dear Linguists, Germanists, and Vasconists on the List:
Christopher Stevens, his successor at UCLA, and I, a former student, are
very sorry to report that our colleague Terence H. Wilbur, Professor
Emeritus of Germanic Linguistics in the Department of German, died in Los
Angeles on the 7th of March.
Terence H. Wilbur was born on April 8, 1924.
He received his B.A. (1947), M.A. (1949) and Ph.D. (1954) from the
University of California, Berkeley.
He taught as an instructor at the University of Massachusetts from 1952
until 1953 and was then hired by the Department of Germanic Languages at
UCLA on July 1, 1953.
He was a member of the Real Academia de la lengua Vasca, Bilbao.
He retired from active university service at UCLA on July 1, 1991.
Prof. Stevens is preparing an obituary. We would be very glad to receive
information from his colleagues and students who live in many parts of the
world and would be very hard for us to find and ask ourselves. Please write
either by Reply mail or directly to Professor Christopher M. Stevens. Our
