ISSCO (Dalle Molle Institute for Semantic and Cognitive Studies, in
the Translation and Interpretation School of the University of Geneva)
has an immediate opening for:

1 Post-doc researcher

To participate in the following project:

LCG TMR Network
Learning Computational Grammars

The job is available in connection with ISSCO's involvement with the
European research network Learning Computational Grammars (LCG) funded
by the EC Training and Mobility of Researchers programme (TMR). The
network runs from 1.03.1998 for three years and involves 7 partner
sites.

LCG researches the application of a variety of machine learning
techniques from neural networks, statistical learning and symbolic
learning. Currently efforts focus on comparison of results based on
attempts to learn noun phrase structure in English, but work on other
languages is possible.  More information on the LCG project can be

The candidate must have strong programming skills and demonstrated
interest in multilingual issues and should have recently completed
his/hers PhD. S/he should not be over 35 years old. S/he is expected
to work together with our current TMR researcher.  The post is
available as of 1.07.2000 until the end of the project.

ISSCO (Dalle Molle Institute for Semantic and Cognitive Studies, in
the Translation and Interpretation School of the University of Geneva)
has an immediate opening for:

1 COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST

to participate in a number of Swiss and European language engineering
projects.

The qualified candidate will collaborate on software design
and implementation in one or more of the following areas:

- parallel text alignment
- syntactic and semantic tagging
- intelligent document analysis
- web-based linguistic resources
- general statistical NLP tools

Requirements:

- university degree in computational linguistics or computer science
- programming skills in C, Java and Perl
- knowledge of Unix systems
- good knowledge of internet technologies
- strong grounding in SGML and XML
- experience in developing software for NLP applications
- fluency in either French or English with good knowledge
  of the other language

Additional qualities include:

- good communication skills
- expertise in probabilistic and statistical methods
- strong linguistic background
- fluency in German and/or Italian
