Sociolinguist position -- modified announcement

Applications are invited for the continuing/tenured position of
LECTURER (equivalent to North American ASSISTANT PROFESSOR) in
SOCIOLINGUISTICS in the DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS.
	
Applications close Oct. 25, 2000.
	
Minimum qualification on appointment is a Ph.D. in linguistics.  The
major responsibilities are:  to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
in sociolinguistics and general linguistics, to conduct research in
sociolinguistics, and to supervise research students.  Candidates should
be excellent teachers at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and
be comfortable and effective with large as well as small classes.
Preference will be given to applicants who have strong training and
experience in sociolinguistics, as well as linguistics in general, and
are currently engaged in, or can develop, active sociolinguistic
research projects.
	
The following make this an attractive position:
(1) The Department of Linguistics is one of the strongest in the
Southern Hemisphere with very successful research projects and
productive faculty.
(2) The position is continuing, equivalent to "tenured" in North
America.
(3) After each six years' service, academic staff qualify for a 12-month
long study leave (sabbatical) with full pay.  (Alternatively, shorter
study leaves can be taken after shorter periods of service.)
(4) Academic staff in Linguistics qualify each 3 years for Erskine
Fellowships with excellent travel support for up to 3 months.
(5) The support for research and international conference travel are
excellent.
(6) The cost of living in Christchurch is low compared with most
European countries, Australia, and much of North America; housing is
inexpensive.
(7) The University of Canterbury is situated in the Christchurch, the
largest city  in the South Island of New Zealand, population ca.
350,000, with the advantages of a large city (good schools, hospitals,
theatre, concerts, etc.) but few of the disadvantages.  The scenery is
beautiful and the climate is gentle (no extremes of cold or heat);
outdoor recreational facilities are excellent.  Christchurch is on the
sea and near the Southern Alps, with its ski-fields and hiking trails.
