==========================================================================
The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.
This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) is looking for a
one-year Auxiliary Agent, starting approximately in May 2001, to
contribute to its Language Technology projects at the JRC-Ispra site
near the Lago Maggiore in Northern Italy.
The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary and international team
of scientists and developers and will contribute to two projects. The
first one is concerned with the automatic assignment of keywords from
a multilingual thesaurus to text, using statistical methods and a
manually indexed text collection. The second project has the aim of
gathering potentially user-relevant documents from the internet and to
analyse, classify and store them. The ideal candidate has a practical
approach and knows how to use, integrate and optimise different tools
in the Windows NT environment.
Requirements: Degree in Computational Linguistics or related areas;
PERL programming experience; working knowledge of English; experience
of working with large corpora or data collections; citizenship of a EU
country.
Desirable knowledge: Knowledge of statistics for automatic
classification and similar applications; knowledge of French, German,
Italian or other European languages; experience with further
programming languages such as C or Java; knowledge of HTML and XML.
Remuneration depends on age, family status, experience and current
residence. The salary for a single person currently residing outside
Italy is approximately 3,000 Euro per month net (after taxes).
We offer interesting work in an expanding team and in an attractive
setting. The JRC employs altogether 2400 staff from many different
countries. 1800 of these work at the Ispra site in Northern Italy,
about 60 km West of the city of Milan.
If you are interested or have questions, please contact Ralf
Steinberger (ralf.steinberger at jrc.it). The deadline for applications
is 18.03.2001. Electronic applications are preferred.
