To all OT and Linguist listers,

As was announced on the OT and linguist list some time ago
a special triple issue of The Linguistic Review has appeared
last December. In it one can find 16 articles that critically
discuss Optimality Theory. Since we suspect that many people
might want to react to these articles, we feel this is the
perfect time to start a new section in TLR. From now on we
invite people to submit short replies to any article that has
appeared in TLR. In fact, we would also welcome short squib-
like submissions containing remarks on any linguistic topic
one considers to be suitably vented through TLR channels.

Replies should not be longer than 5 TLR pages, while remarks
may be longer, to a maximum of 10 pages (both including
references). They should be sent to:

each TLR issue. With this new section, we hope to start a long
series of fruitful discussions that will further enrich the
value of the articles that appear in TLR.

Conference Announcement
Call for Papers

TiLT 2001

The first conference on Tools in Linguistic Theory will take place at the
Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS

July 6----July 8 2001

Abstracts are invited for 7 presentations on theoretical syntax.

Deadline for abstract receipt: Monday April 2nd, 2001
Notification of acceptance: Monday April 30th, 2001

The conference is specifically concerned with foundational issues in
theoretical syntax. The emphasis is on a strong reading of the term
'theoretical': issues directly concerned with the model itself (the
'theory'), and the tools needed to further develop the model. Issues
include the nature of the primitive syntactic objects, and the fundamental
principles governing the combinatorics of these objects (see the appended
statement of purpose at our website for more background and details). The
format of the conference is very much workshop-like with ample opportunity
for discussion in a setting which facilitates effective informal
interaction. The conference will have 14 presentations.

7 presentations will be given by  invited speakers. Invited speakers will
include:

- Edwin Williams
- Chris Collins
- Sam Epstein
- Misi Brody
- Dominique Sportiche

In addition, 7 presentations will be selected on the basis of the submitted
abstracts.

Selected presentations will be 45 minutes including 10 minutes of discussion.

Selected speakers will be offered free meals and lodging during the
conference and may expect to be reimbursed for reasonable travel expenses.

Authors should limit themselves to one single and one joint abstract.

Abstracts should be at most two pages long, in a 12 point font with 1-inch
margins. They may be sent either by e-mail attachment (name, address,
affiliation in the body, the abstract itself anonymous ; Ms Word files are
preferred) or by regular mail (1 copy with name, address and affiliation, 5
anonymous copies). E-mailed abstracts should be sent to tilt at let.uu.nl.
