Subject: North West Linguistics Conference - NWLC 2001
First call for papers for NWLC (North West Linguistics Conference):
NWLC is a student conference which alternates between four universities in
the Pacific North West (UBC, UVic, SFU, and UWashington). The goal of this
conference is to bring students together in a non-threatening environment to
share their work with other students.
The conference will be held at UBC (Vancouver BC) on April 7-8, 2001.
Abstracts will be accepted in any theoretical or experimental area of
linguistics. Abstracts should be 1pg in length, with one extra page for data
and references. Abstracts are due February 24th, 2001. Submit your abstracts
by email to nwlc_ubc at hotmail.com. The preliminary schedule will be available
by March 5, 2001.

3rd UK LANGUAGE VARIATION CONFERENCE
Call for papers:
The 3rd UK Language Variation Conference will take place at the
University of York from July 19th to 22nd, 2001. Invited speakers will
be:
Lesley Milroy (University of Michigan & University of York),
Jane Stuart-Smith (University of Glasgow)
Peter Trudgill (University of Fribourg)
This series of meetings was inaugurated at the University of Reading
in 1997, with the second at the University of Essex in 2000. It aims
to provide a forum in the United Kingdom where the focus will be on
the quantitative study of language variation and change.
Proposals are invited for 20-minute contributions (plus 10 minutes¹
discussion) on topics falling within the proposed focus
area. Abstracts (max. 500 words) should be sent within the text of an
email to uklvc3 at york.ac.uk, stating author¹s name, address (electronic
and postal) and institutional affiliation.

Submission of abstracts: February 16th, 2001. All abstracts will be
refereed and replies will be sent out by April 1st, 2001.
