We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In a 1991 piece for ADFL, Bill Van Patten gave a list of findings of
interest to language teachers. The article, "SLA Research and FL Teaching,"
appeared in two parts. One of the summary findings was this:
"#2:Certain grammatical morphemes tend to emerge in a fixed order."
A question came up in class yesterday regarding the current validity of
that statement. The difference of opinion was "yes" and "no." Van Patten
cited as sources himself, Andersen, Ellis, Gass and Selinker.
Can someone assist me off-list with further info or an update on the current
thinking on this point?
Thanks!
PG
