Calouste Gulbenkian Professorship of Armenian Studies
The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Calouste
Gulbenkian Professorship of Armenian Studies with effect from 1
October 2002 or such later date as may be arranged, following the
retirement of Professor Robert W. Thomson, FBA.
The Gulbenkian Foundation established the Calouste Gulbenkian
Professorship of Armenian Studies in 1965 through a generous
benefaction.
The person elected to the chair must have competence to teach the
Armenian language, and proven distinction in the study of the
literature and history of the classical period, with wide interests in
the modern period and in Armenian culture generally. Candidates are
also expected to have a good knowledge of one or more of the languages
and literatures of neighbouring areas.
A non-stipendiary fellowship at Pembroke College is attached to the
professorship.
Applications (ten copies, or one only from overseas candidates),

telephone/fax numbers) who have agreed to act as referees on this
occasion, should be received not later than 10 September 2001 by the
