Between Koineization and Standardization: New World Spanish Revisited
Issue Editor: Margarita Hidalgo
This volume commemorates the one-hundredth anniversary of research in
New World Spanish. It reviews the major works that contributed to its
definition in sociolinguistic terms, explores a model of historical
evolution (koineization, vernacularization, and standardization), and
introduces case studies from Mexico, Peru and Colombia. It proposes
refinements to the model by including an intermediate stage of
evolution - diversification - and by illustrating the process of
de-standardization in peripheral areas of the continent. It also
offers a review article on Afrohispanic creoles.
