Job Description:

The University of Toronto has developed a vision to create at its
Mississauga campus a leading centre for understanding the impact of
information technology on communication and culture. It is seeking an
accomplished and energetic academic leader as Director of a new
undergraduate degree Program in Communication, Culture, and
Information Technology, to be delivered jointly by the University and
by Sheridan College at its Oakville campus.  This position represents
an exceptional opportunity to participate in and lead a major new
initiative at a university campus. The Director will assume a leading
academic role having primary responsibility for the academic program
and the encouragement of research. The Director will ensure a
commitment to student and faculty development at UTM and at Sheridan
by ensuring the highest academic standards and public recognition of
the program's excellence. The Director will hold a tenured position at
the associate or full professor level in an academic department of the
University of Toronto and report to the chief academic officer of the
University of Toronto at Mississauga.  Linguists are encouraged to
apply. The Director's position is for five years, renewable.

The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD, have an
internationally recognised academic record, with experience in
directing innovative changes in academic environments and the
perspectives requisite to the development of an interdisciplinary and
inter-institutional initiative. The Director will be expected to carry
the vision for the program to the public and governments and will be
heavily involved in development work. Established in 1967, the
Mississauga campus provides a college environment for 200 faculty and
6500 students from the most culturally diverse communities in
Canada. Programs are offered in Humanities, Science, Social Science
and Management. Transformation of the campus will unfold with a
significant investment in new programs, faculty, and facilities as the
campus undergoes significant growth in the next decade.

Initiatives are underway to expand e-learning, graduate studies and
research centres. The new program in Communication, Culture, and
Information Technology will represent a 20% expansion of the present
campus. Two new buildings are being designed for the program, one each
at Sheridan and at UTM. They will open in 2003.  Deadline for
applications is July 15, 2001. The position is available September 1,
2001 but is negotiable. The University of Toronto is strongly
