Subject: Language policy in China: Theory and practice
I am organizing one or two AAS panel(s) on "Language policy in China: Theory
and practice". To my knowledge, this topic has not been covered at AAS at
least since the 1980s.
The panel (s) shall cover the following topics (at least):
a) the theoretic basis of China's language policy;
b) how China's language policy affects the relationship between the majority
language and minority languages (in government business, education, media,
business, and everyday life);
c) how it affects the relationship between Putonghua and Chinese dialects
(in government business, education, media, business, and everyday life); and
d) how it affects the relationship among minority languages (in government
business, education, media, business, and everyday life).
An AAS panel normally consist of a chair, four presenters, and one discussant
- maximally six people. If there is sufficient interest, we can organize
two panels: one on theory and practice in Chinese dialect communities and
one on theory and practice in minority communities.
Deadline: July 20, 2001 ( I will put the panel(s) together and mail before
AAS deadline--August 3, 2001)
Send me (zhoum at colorado.edu) an abstract of maximally 250 words in MS word
format by email, if you are interested in a presentation of your research.
Send me (zhoum at colorado.edu) a short academic biography (500 words) with
focus on your research interest and publications, if you are interested in
chairing a panel or being a discussant.
I have done some research on the panel topic for a while and have a good and
updated bibliography. I can email it if anyone is interested.
At the AAS conference, we will discuss how to pursue the project furhter, as
a book project or as a special issue in an appropriate journal.
